Quick question, no peeking: in an average year in the United States, which kills more people — sharks or falling vending machines? Most people feel a tug toward sharks, because the moment you read the word a whole scene assembles itself: the fin, the music, that one news segment. The honest answer is that both are astonishingly rare, the numbers are roughly comparable, and neither belongs anywhere near the top of any sane list of things to worry about — yet one of them feels far deadlier than the other purely because it stars in a famous movie. Your fear didn’t track the frequency. It tracked the footage. That small, slightly embarrassing gap between what feels common and what is common is the entire subject of this course.
The shortcut behind it has a name. In the early 1970s the psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky noticed that when people are asked how likely or how frequent something is, they rarely go and count. Instead they do something faster: they ask themselves how easily can I bring an example to mind? — and the easier the examples come, the more common the thing feels. They called this the availability heuristic: estimating probability or frequency by the ease of recall. It is a genuinely useful rule of thumb most of the time — things you encounter often are usually easier to remember, so ease and frequency really do correlate. The trouble is everything else that makes a memory easy to summon: how vivid it was, how recent, how emotionally loud, how heavily the news repeated it. A shark attack is rare but unforgettable; heart disease is the leading killer in the developed world but almost never makes the front page.
