Picture two ways your brain could answer the question “how common is this?” The first is slow and honest: go find the numbers, count, compare. The second is instant and effortless: notice how quickly an example comes to mind, and let that feeling stand in for the answer. A flood of easy examples feels like “common”; a struggle to think of even one feels like “rare.” Your brain runs the second method almost every time, because it’s free and usually close enough — and it never mentions that it switched. This course is about the moments when that swap quietly hands you the wrong answer.

That mental shortcut has a name: the availability heuristic — judging how likely or how frequent something is by how easily relevant examples come to mind. (A heuristic is just a mental rule of thumb: a fast, good-enough shortcut your mind uses instead of a full calculation.) It was identified by psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in the early 1970s, and it is one of the most reliable, repeatable quirks in all of human judgment. Most of the time it works, because things you bump into often genuinely are easier to recall. The danger lives in everything other than frequency that also makes a memory easy to summon — and those things distort your sense of the odds without you ever noticing the distortion.

Notice the trap built into it: ease of recall feels like evidence. When examples flood in, the sheer fluency of it lands as a little signal of this happens a lot — and that signal is completely blind to why the examples came easily. A single horrifying news story you saw last night can summon faster than a statistic you read a year ago about something a thousand times more common. The story wins the recall race, so it wins your sense of the odds — and you walk away genuinely believing the rare thing is the frequent one.

Why the easiest memories mislead

The availability heuristic isn’t a malfunction — it’s a clever bet that usually pays off. In the world our minds evolved for, the things you encountered most often really were the things easiest to remember, so “easy to recall” was a decent proxy for “happens a lot.” The bet only fails when something other than frequency inflates how easily a memory comes — and in a modern world of news feeds, viral video, and blockbuster movies, that happens constantly. Four forces do most of the damage, and you’ll meet each in detail later: vividness (a gory, concrete image sticks; a dry number slides off), recency (what happened this week feels more typical than what happened for the last decade), emotion (fear and outrage burn memories in deep), and repetition (the more often the media replays a story, the more available — and therefore “common” — it feels).

Here’s the consequence that should unsettle you: a newsroom doing its job perfectly will still leave you miscalibrated. News is, by definition, the rare and the dramatic — “plane lands safely” is not a headline, “plane crashes” is. So the events that get the most coverage are precisely the ones that happen least, and the slow, common killers (heart disease, diabetes) get almost no airtime at all. Feed your sense of risk off the news and you’ll end up afraid of the rare spectacular thing while ignoring the mundane thing far more likely to actually get you. Your fears will be a near-perfect inverse of the real danger.

How to use this course

One rule does most of the work: guess before you peek. When you hit an exercise, commit to an answer before revealing anything. The small sting of being wrong is exactly what makes the idea stick — and on this particular subject, notice the irony: a smooth, nodding read-through gives you a vivid memory of having learned availability bias, which your brain will then misread as actually understanding it. Don’t let the feeling of fluency stand in for the real thing. The exercises are where the learning happens.
