You’ve watched two rivals sprint up the treadmill and go nowhere, and you’ve met the great biological arms races. Now we slow down and stare at the single mistake that all of this is really about — the one your own brain makes about your own life, constantly, without ever announcing it. It’s the trap at the heart of the Red Queen, and it has fooled people far smarter than the both of us.
Here it is, stated as a confession you’ve probably made: “I got better this year, so I must be getting ahead.” That sentence feels airtight. It is, in fact, only true half the time — and the half where it’s false is exactly the half where it matters most. This lesson is the cleanup crew. We’re going to name the illusion precisely, hand you a single diagnostic that tells you which world you’re standing in, and then teach you the move almost nobody makes: knowing when to stop running and change the race instead of just running faster in it. Every parent in a competitive school district starts paying for tutoring, test prep, and extra coaching, hoping to get their kid into the same small number of elite university slots. Each child genuinely learns more than children did a generation ago. After everyone has ramped up spending equally, what has mostly happened to any single child's *chance of admission*?
That tutoring arms race is going to follow us through the lesson, because it’s the cleanest everyday case of the trap: real improvement, real effort, real money — and almost no change in the prize. You just predicted that without knowing a thing about any particular school. That’s the model doing the work.
The treadmill, named
The analogy. Imagine you’re at a packed stadium and the people in front of you stand up to see the game better. So you stand up too — and now you can see, briefly. But everyone behind you stands as well, and within seconds the whole stadium is on its feet. Look around: nobody can see any better than when everyone was sitting. You’re all just standing now, legs aching, view identical. Here’s the cruel part — you can’t fix it by sitting back down, because the moment you sit, the wall of standing people in front blocks you completely. Standing bought you nothing; sitting would cost you everything. Welcome to the treadmill.
The precise definition. The treadmill trap is the error of measuring your improvement against your past self — an absolute yardstick — and concluding you’re winning, when the scoreboard that actually decides the outcome is your position relative to rivals who are improving too. You feel the burn of genuine effort, you see real gains over last year, and your intuition files that under “progress.” But if everyone you’re competing with made the same gains, your position hasn’t moved — and position was the whole game. The trap isn’t that the improvement is fake. The improvement is real. The trap is mistaking it for an advantage.
The hinge, one more time, is the distinction this whole course is built on: absolute improvement is “I am better than I was.” Relative position is “I am ahead of my rivals.” In a fixed world — paying off a debt, learning to swim, fixing a leaky roof — those two are the same thing, so the confusion never bites. But the instant your competitors improve in response to you, the two come apart, and the treadmill trap is what happens when you keep using the absolute yardstick to score a relative game.
The central trap, in one sentence
“I improved, therefore I got ahead” is only true when nobody you’re competing with improved too. The moment your rivals are running the same race — matching your gains, copying your moves, adapting right back — your absolute improvement can be enormous and your relative position can sit dead still. Measuring progress against your past self feels honest and is sometimes a lie. Always ask the second question: did everyone else improve too? If they did, you ran flat out to stay in the same place.
A runner says: 'My marathon time is twenty minutes faster than five years ago — I'm clearly a better competitor now, so I should be placing higher.' What's the missing piece that the treadmill trap warns about?
When to use it
Reach for this any time you catch yourself — or a company, or a country — celebrating an improvement and concluding you’ve pulled ahead. Stop and ask the two-part question: better than my past self, yes — but did everyone I’m competing with improve too? If the answer to the second is “yes,” your gain may have bought you a standstill, and you should price your effort accordingly. The pitfall in the other direction (we’ll get to it) is concluding the running is therefore pointless. It usually isn’t. But the first job is simply to stop confusing “I improved” with “I got ahead.”
Positional vs. absolute goods — the diagnostic that does all the work
The whole skill of escaping the treadmill comes down to one classification you can learn in a minute and use for the rest of your life. Economists drew this line, and it’s the sharpest tool in this lesson.
Absolute goods. An absolute good is something whose value is intrinsic — it doesn’t depend on how much anyone else has. Your health is worth the same to you whether or not your neighbour is healthy. A vaccine protects you regardless of who else is vaccinated (in fact others being vaccinated helps you more). Clean water, literacy, a warm house, the ability to read, a cured disease, knowing how to swim — these are absolute. When you improve an absolute good, the improvement sticks, because nobody can erase it by improving alongside you. Two people both learning to read doesn’t make either of them less literate. Absolute games are the ones where “I improved, therefore I’m better off” is just true.
Positional goods. A positional good is something whose value depends entirely on how much you have relative to others — on your rank, not your amount. Status is the purest example: being “high status” means being above other people, which is impossible for everyone at once. So are the best house in the neighbourhood, the top job in a field with few openings, being the fastest gun, a military edge in an arms race, or a place in a fixed number of university slots. The defining feature: if everyone gets more, nobody is better off, because the good is the ranking, and ranking is zero-sum. Positional goods are exactly where the Red Queen lives — improve all you like, but if your rivals match you, your position is unmoved and your effort cancels out.
Worked example — the neighbourhood that renovated together. Suppose “having the nicest house on the street” is what you actually want (a positional good: it’s about being nicer than the neighbours). You spend 40,000 dollars on a stunning kitchen. For one glorious month, yours is the best house. Then, seeing your renovation, every neighbour renovates too. Now every house on the street is gorgeous — and yours is once again merely average for the street. Collectively the street spent half a million dollars, every kitchen genuinely improved (absolute gain!), and nobody’s relative standing changed (zero positional gain). That half-million bought a standstill. Compare that to spending those same 40,000 dollars on, say, getting a chronic illness treated — an absolute good. The neighbours treating their illnesses too takes nothing away from your recovered health. One game is a treadmill; the other isn’t. Telling them apart is the entire skill.

Most real situations are mixed — and that's the interesting part
Don’t expect every good to sit cleanly in one bucket. Most real things are mixed. A university education is partly absolute (you genuinely learn things — knowledge nobody can un-teach you) and partly positional (the credential is worth more when fewer people have it, and floods in value as everyone gets one). A high salary is absolute in what it buys (food, shelter, travel) and positional in the status it signals. The skill isn’t forcing things into one box — it’s learning to see both components and ask which one is driving your effort. When you’re pouring money into the positional half of a mixed good (the credential, the status, the rank), the Red Queen is waiting. When you’re building the absolute half (the actual skill, the real health), your gains will stick.

Watch what standing still costs
In the intro you used the coevolution race to feel the trap: both lines climb, the meter stays near centre, all that running keeps you in the same place. Now use the same island to learn the other half of the lesson — the half that stops you from drawing exactly the wrong conclusion.
Run the race a few generations and watch the familiar pattern: both rivals improve hugely (absolute gains soaring), the relative-advantage meter barely twitches off centre (no positional gain). It looks like wasted effort, doesn’t it? Then press “Stop running (opt out).” Watch your line go flat while the rival keeps climbing — and watch the meter slam over against you as the gap yawns open. That’s the whole point of this section, made visible.

Run a few generations: both lines climb, the meter stays near centre — running flat out to stay in place. Now press Stop running and keep advancing. Your line freezes while the rival keeps climbing, and your relative position collapses. The running wasn't winning you anything — but stopping is losing.

This is the counter-intuitive heart of the trap. Your first instinct, once you realize the running buys no relative gain, is to conclude: then I should stop — why waste the effort? The race just showed you why. On a genuine treadmill, the running isn’t offensive, it’s defensive. You can’t win by running, but you can absolutely lose by stopping — because while you stand still, the rival keeps climbing, and the gap that decides survival opens against you. The gazelle that stops getting faster doesn’t get to keep its current safety; it gets eaten, because the cheetahs didn’t stop. The company that stops innovating doesn’t hold its current market share; it loses it to rivals who kept going.
So both naive readings are wrong. “I improved, therefore I progressed” is wrong (the rivals matched you; your position didn’t move). And “the running is therefore wasted, so I’ll quit” is even more wrong (quitting on a real treadmill is fatal). The running is the price of staying in the game. The right question isn’t “should I run harder?” or “should I quit?” — it’s the deeper one we turn to now: should I be in this race at all?
Having watched the opt-out, a friend concludes: 'Since running on the treadmill never improves your relative position, the smart move is always to just stop running and save the effort.' Why is this dangerously wrong?
When the running is worth it — and when to step off
So you’ve diagnosed a treadmill. You know running won’t get you ahead, but stopping cold will get you killed. What are your actual options? There are really only three sane moves, and knowing which one you’re in is the payoff of the whole model.
Keep running — when stopping costs more than you can afford
Running is the rational choice when the thing you’d lose by stopping is something you genuinely can’t afford to lose: survival, staying in business, staying solvent. The gazelle keeps running because the alternative is being eaten. The pharmaceutical company keeps developing new antibiotics because bacteria keep evolving resistance and the alternative is patients dying. The software company keeps shipping security patches because attackers keep finding new holes and the alternative is being breached. In these races the prize for running is not falling out of existence, and that prize is worth almost any cost. Here, “all the running you can do to stay in the same place” isn’t a tragedy — it’s the rent you pay to keep playing a game you must stay in.
Step off — when the prize is purely positional and the cost keeps escalating
Now the opposite case. Sometimes the prize is purely positional and nobody actually profits from the running — the whole field just spends more and more to stay in the same relative place. This is a collective-action trap: each player rationally escalates because they can’t unilaterally stop, but the universal escalation cancels out and just raises everyone’s costs. The tutoring arms race from the top of the lesson is exactly this — every family spends more, the kids’ relative ranks barely move, and the only net effect is that everyone is poorer and more stressed. An advertising war where two rivals spend ever more on ads just to neutralize each other’s spending, ending with the same market split at twice the cost, is the same trap. When you spot a purely positional race whose escalating cost buys no one anything, the move is to find a way out of it.
Change the game — the deepest move
Here’s the one almost nobody makes, and it’s the most powerful thing this model teaches: the way to win a relative race is often to stop running it and find an absolute game instead. Instead of sprinting faster on someone else’s treadmill, you step onto different ground entirely — a niche, a differentiated position, a race where you’re not competing head-to-head with the adapting rival at all. The restaurant that can’t win the price war stops competing on price and becomes the only place in town serving one beloved specialty. The company that can’t out-feature its giant rival stops trying and serves a customer the giant ignores. You didn’t run faster; you changed which race you were in — and the rival’s adaptations no longer point at you.
And there’s a fourth, rarer escape worth flagging because the next lesson develops it: sometimes the runners can collectively agree to stop. If everyone’s just paying escalating costs to stay even, all of them would be better off if they all sat back down at once. That’s what arms-control treaties are (nations agreeing to cap weapons), what some regulations do (capping an arms race nobody profits from), and what cartels attempt (firms agreeing not to compete a destructive dimension into the ground). The catch — and it’s the whole drama of lesson 5 — is that the incentive to defect and stand back up is brutal, so these agreements are fragile. We’ll meet the game theory that explains why next.
The deepest move: trade the relative race for an absolute one

The master move is to ask whether you can leave the race entirely. You usually can’t win a purely relative race by running; you win it by refusing to play it and finding an absolute game instead — a niche, a differentiated position, a place where your improvement sticks because no adapting rival is matching you stride for stride. Don’t ask only “how do I run faster?” Ask “is this even a race I should be in?”

- Will rivals erase this? If you improve, will the people you’re competing against improve right back and cancel your gain? If yes, you’re on a treadmill and your improvement won’t move your position — price it accordingly. If no, your gain sticks; pour effort in freely.
- Is the treadmill worth running? If it is a treadmill, what does stopping cost? If stopping means losing something you can’t afford (survival, your livelihood), keep running — the running is defensive rent, not waste. If stopping just means forgoing a positional trinket whose cost keeps climbing, that’s a signal to look for the exit.
- Can I change games? Before resigning yourself to running forever, ask: is there a different race — a niche, a differentiated position, an absolute game — where my improvement would actually stick?
