Two errors compound: survivorship/hindsight bias makes the long, invisible build-up disappear, and narrative over-fitting dresses a messy accumulation in a tidy single-trigger story.

The trap. You see stasis — no visible change — and conclude nothing is happening, so you stop paying attention. But stasis is an active achievement: stabilising selection is working hard every generation to keep the form on its peak, swatting down every deviation. A form held flat is not a form at rest; it’s a form under continuous, opposed force. Confusing the two makes you ignore the mounting tension until the punctuation ambushes you — which loops straight back into the hindsight trap.
The scale-and-measurement caution. There’s a second, sharper version of this error: don’t reify the chart. The pattern you see depends on the resolution you see it at.
