The No Free Lunch theorem says the crown is empty. There is no method that beats all the others across every problem. This course is about why that’s true, why it’s good news rather than bad, and how it quietly rewires the questions you ask.

Imagine two friends arguing about the best way to look for lost keys. One always checks the kitchen first; the other always checks the bedroom first. Who’s right?
It depends entirely on where the keys actually are. Over a lifetime of losing keys in all sorts of places, neither habit finds them faster on average — every head start in one room is paid back by a slow start in another. Neither friend has a free lunch. What they can have is a paid lunch: if you know you always drop your keys by the door, searching the door first genuinely wins. The knowledge is what you pay with.
Where we're headed
That little keys example is the whole theorem in miniature. “Averaged over everywhere the keys could be, all search habits tie” is No Free Lunch. “But I know where I usually drop them, so I search there first” is the paid lunch that makes you fast in the real world. Keep both halves in mind.
