Natural Selection

An algorithm, not just a fact about animals. It builds design out of dumb repetition.

Variation, selection, heredity — repeat. Any system where traits vary, some copies survive better, and survivors pass their traits on will design itself over time, with no designer in charge. The most powerful algorithm in nature, and it runs far beyond biology.

A human eye can track a hawk against a bright sky, focus from a book to the horizon in a heartbeat, and adjust to a moonlit room. It looks designed — so finely tuned that for most of history the only available explanation was that someone must have designed it. Then, in 1859, Charles Darwin pointed at a mechanism that could carve out something that intricate with no designer at all, no plan, no goal, nobody steering. That mechanism is natural selection, and it is one of the most important mental models you will ever pick up — not because you need to pass a biology exam, but because it is a general-purpose algorithm for how complex, well-fitted things arise out of blind repetition.

Here is the whole engine in one breath. Take a population whose members vary. Let some of that variation make certain members a little better at surviving and reproducing in their particular world (selection). Make sure offspring tend to resemble their parents, so the helpful variations get passed on (heredity). Now press repeat, for generation after generation. That’s it. There is no fourth ingredient. Variation proposes, selection disposes, heredity remembers — and the population slowly, mindlessly, accumulates whatever works. Run it long enough and you get eyes, wings, immune systems, and the entire branching tree of life, none of it foreseen by anyone.

The reason this belongs in a latticework of thinking tools, rather than a biology textbook, is that the algorithm doesn’t care what it’s running on. Anywhere you have those three ingredients — variation, selection, heredity — you get the same upward grind toward “things that fit their environment,” whether the things are beetles, businesses, gadgets, jokes, software, or scientific theories. A market quietly selects companies. A/B tests select web-page designs. Your immune system runs natural selection on antibodies inside your body, in real time. Catchphrases that spread and stick are being selected for catchiness. Once you can spot the three ingredients, you stop seeing a world of things that were planned and start seeing a world of things that were selected — and that is a very different, and far more accurate, way to read reality.

This course assumes you know exactly nothing about evolution — only what a mental model is, which you picked up in the first course. We’ll build the three-ingredient recipe from scratch and prove why you need all three; pin down what biologists actually mean by fitness (a word almost everyone gets wrong — it is not “the strongest”) and how a shift in the environment rewrites what counts as fit; lift the algorithm clean out of biology and watch it run in markets, technology, ideas and machine learning — the real payoff for your thinking; and finally clear away the three misreadings that trip up nearly everyone, including the big one: the deep-seated feeling that evolution is trying to get somewhere. You’ll drive an interactive population of beetles that redesigns its own colour in front of you, and you’ll leave able to look at almost any well-adapted thing — a body part, a company, a habit, a meme — and ask the question that unlocks it: what’s varying, what’s being selected, and what gets inherited?
