There’s an old riddle. A truck gets wedged under a low bridge — jammed tight, can’t go forward, can’t back out. Engineers gather, argue about jacks, cranes, cutting the bridge, cutting the truck. A kid watching from the pavement asks the obvious question nobody in a suit thought to ask: why don’t you let some air out of the tyres? The truck drops a few centimetres and rolls free.
Every adult there was thinking harder about the same thing — how to move the bridge or the truck. The kid moved sideways: don’t change the bridge, change the truck’s height. That sidestep is the entire subject of this course, and it has a name.
The one-breath version
Lateral thinking means solving a problem by changing where you attack it from — reframing the question, dropping a hidden assumption, or deliberately jumping to a fresh starting point — instead of grinding forward from the obvious one. The term was coined in 1967 by Edward de Bono, a Maltese psychologist who spent his career arguing that creativity isn’t a mystical gift you’re born with; it’s a technique you can practise on purpose.
Here’s the distinction that runs under everything. Vertical thinking is the normal, logical kind: you take one line of reasoning and dig it deeper, each step carefully justified by the last. It’s how you do long division or debug code, and it’s magnificent — when you’re digging in the right place. Lateral thinking is what you reach for when you’re not: instead of digging the same hole deeper, you go and start a hole somewhere else entirely.
The one-sentence version
Vertical thinking digs the same hole deeper. Lateral thinking digs a new hole somewhere else. When more effort in the obvious direction stops paying off, that’s the signal to move sideways instead of pushing harder.
Before you read — take a guess
A hotel's guests keep complaining the lift is too slow. The obvious fix — a faster motor or a second lift — costs a fortune. The manager instead hangs large mirrors by the lift doors, and the complaints stop. What kind of thinking solved it?
Why your brain fights this
If lateral thinking is so useful, why doesn’t it come naturally? Because of how the mind is built. De Bono’s key insight was that the brain is a self-organising pattern system: it takes incoming information and files it into grooves, and once a groove exists, new information rushes down it automatically. That’s a feature — it’s why you can read this sentence without sounding out every letter, why a doctor recognises a disease at a glance. Patterns are mental shortcuts, and they’re mostly a gift.
But there’s a catch. Once your mind has a well-worn groove for a problem, the “obvious” solution feels inevitable and every other path feels invisible — not wrong, just literally unseen. You’re not choosing to ignore the sideways answer; your brain routed straight past it before you were even conscious of a choice. That’s why the truck-and-bridge answer feels so obvious after someone says it and was so invisible before. Lateral thinking is the deliberate practice of climbing out of the groove.
A pattern system, in one image
Imagine rain falling on a landscape. The first drops wander, but they carve tiny channels — and every later drop follows those channels, deepening them, until all the water runs down a few big rivers. Your mind does this with ideas: early patterns become the rivers that all later thinking flows down. Useful, fast — and exactly why the fresh, sideways idea can’t get a look-in without a deliberate nudge.
Given that the brain is a self-organising pattern system, why do the best lateral solutions so often feel “obvious in hindsight”?
Why this is a mental model, not a slogan
You’ve heard “think outside the box” a thousand times, and it’s nearly useless — it tells you that you should be more creative without telling you how. Lateral thinking earns its place as a real mental model — a compact, reusable way of seeing you can carry between domains — because it comes with actual tools: ways to find the assumption you’re trapped in, jolt yourself onto a new track, and generate options on demand. “Be creative” is a wish. Lateral thinking is a set of moves you can run on purpose, even on a grey Tuesday when inspiration is nowhere.
It’s also a tool with honest limits, which we’ll be strict about. Lateral thinking generates new starting points; it doesn’t test them. Moving sideways to a clever idea is worthless if the idea doesn’t actually work — and checking whether it works is a job for patient vertical thinking. The two aren’t rivals; they’re a team. Anyone who only ever “thinks outside the box” and never rigorously builds anything is just being weird, not useful. Knowing when to move sideways and when to dig straight down is the real skill.

- Provocation & Random Entry — de Bono’s tools rendered plainly: PO and provocation (say something deliberately “wrong” to jump the groove), random entry (feed in an unrelated word to force a new association), and movement versus judgment.
- Diverge, Then Converge — when to generate wide with judgment switched off and when to switch it back on to evaluate — and why mixing the two kills good ideas in the cradle. Plus practical drills you can run today.
- Where Lateral Thinking Misleads — the limits: it complements rigour rather than replacing it, “outside the box” as an empty slogan, contrarian ≠ useful, and the survivorship bias hiding in every famous creativity anecdote.
Then a Final Exam — graded, one question at a time, one-way: once you answer, it locks. No back button, no retries.
How to use this course
One rule does most of the work: try the puzzle before you read the answer. This subject is full of little problems you can actually attempt, and the whole point is the moment you feel stuck — because feeling the groove hold you shut is what teaches you to climb out of it. A smooth, nodding read-through teaches almost nothing. The puzzles are the lesson; the prose just sets them up.
