You have spent this course learning to tear problems down to bedrock and rebuild them. Now for the twist nobody warns you about: doing that for everything is a terrible idea. First-principles thinking is a sledgehammer, and a person who treats every problem like a wall to demolish is exhausting to be around — and, worse, slow. This lesson is the antidote to first-principles zealotry. The real skill isn’t reasoning from first principles; it’s knowing when to.

The cost: first principles is slow and expensive
Imagine if, every morning, you re-derived how to make coffee from the chemistry of water and roasted beans. You’d never leave the house. Most of life works because we don’t think from scratch — we copy the answer that already works.
First-principles thinking — breaking a problem down to fundamental truths and rebuilding up from them — has a real price tag. It costs time (decomposing takes longer than copying), effort (sustained, uncomfortable thinking), and expertise (you often lack the deep knowledge to even identify the true fundamentals). Spend that budget on the wrong problem and you’ve burned hours to reinvent something that was already sitting on a shelf.
Its cheaper cousin is reasoning by analogy — solving a new problem by copying what worked for a similar problem before (“this is like that, so do what worked there”). It gets a bad reputation in first-principles circles, treated as lazy. It is not lazy. Reasoning by analogy is a brilliant compression of accumulated human experience: thousands of people already paid the first-principles cost, and the analogy lets you download their answer for free.
Analogy isn't the enemy
Reasoning by analogy is the default mode of every competent person, most of the time. You drive on the correct side of the road, use a standard plug, and pay with the local currency — all by analogy, all correctly. First principles is the exception you deploy on purpose, not the rule.
When to use it
Use the cost as a filter: only pay the first-principles tax when the expected payoff clears it. If copying the proven answer is fast, safe, and good enough — copy it. The skill is being cheap with your sledgehammer.
When analogy is the right call
A trail through the woods exists because thousands of feet found the efficient path. Bushwhacking your own route “from first principles” usually just gets you lost, scratched, and late. For well-trodden problems, the trail is the smart answer.
Reach for analogy — i.e. trust the conventional answer — when:
- The stakes are low. A wrong choice costs little, so the cheap method wins.
- The problem is well-trodden and the conventional answer is genuinely good (it’s been stress-tested by millions of people already).
- You’re under time pressure and need a decision now, not a derivation later.
- The problem is outside your competence, where experts have already done the first-principles work for you — your job is to stand on their shoulders, not redo their proofs badly.

Worked example. You’re building a one-off wooden shelf and need to pick a screw size. Do you compute shear stress from the wood’s material properties? No. You grab the standard size the hardware store recommends. Low stakes, well-trodden, time-sensitive, outside your specialty — analogy wins on every row. Save the sledgehammer.

When first principles earns its cost
So when is the sledgehammer worth swinging? When the analogy is failing you, missing, or quietly built on a lie. First principles pays off when:
- The stakes are high — a better answer is worth real effort, and a wrong one is expensive or irreversible.
- The standard answer is failing or absent — everyone’s playbook isn’t working, or there is no playbook yet.
- You suspect a load-bearing assumption is just convention — “we’ve always done it this way” is doing a lot of structural work, and nobody’s checked it in years.
- You’re trying to do something genuinely new — innovation requires departing from the analogy, because the analogy only contains what’s already been done.
- Everyone agrees, but no one can say why — universal consensus with zero articulable reasoning is a flashing sign that the answer was copied, not understood.
Worked example. When SpaceX looked at rocket costs, the industry analogy said “rockets cost hundreds of millions; that’s just the price.” High stakes, a failing-to-improve standard answer, and a suspect inherited assumption — perfect first-principles territory. They decomposed a rocket into its raw materials (aluminum, titanium, copper, carbon fiber) and found those cost a tiny fraction of the finished price. The analogy had hidden a huge opportunity. That’s a problem worth the sledgehammer.

Chesterton’s fence
Here’s where overeager first-principles thinkers fall off a cliff. They drill “why does this rule exist?”, get no immediate answer, conclude “this is irrational”, and tear the rule down — only to discover it was the one thing preventing a disaster.
Chesterton’s fence is a principle from writer G.K. Chesterton: do not tear down a fence until you know why it was put there. If you come across a fence across a road and can’t see its purpose, the answer is not “it’s pointless, remove it.” The answer is “go find out why someone built it” — because someone, at some cost, built it for a reason you may not yet see.
The pitfall it guards against is arrogantly dismissing conventions as irrational when they actually encode hard-won knowledge that’s invisible to you. A rule that looks dumb often looks dumb only because you weren’t around for the catastrophe it prevents. The convention is compressed experience — sometimes blood-bought experience.
The crucial distinction
Chesterton’s fence is NOT “obey all rules.” Good first-principles thinking respects the fence enough to investigate why it exists — and then, if the reason no longer holds, removes it with full understanding. That’s the opposite of both blind obedience and blind demolition. You earn the right to remove a fence by first explaining it.
Worked example. A factory has a baffling rule: “never run line 3 and line 5 at full speed simultaneously.” It looks like pointless bureaucracy throttling output. A first-principles zealot rips it out to boost productivity — and the shared power circuit trips, halting the whole plant for a day. A first-principles thinker who respects the fence first asks why, learns about the shared circuit, and either keeps the rule or — better — fixes the circuit so the rule is genuinely no longer needed. Same skepticism, opposite outcome.
You inherit a deployment checklist with a weird step everyone follows but no one can explain. It slows releases down. What does Chesterton's fence advise?
Misconception: “first principles is always superior to analogy”
It is not. This is the single most common disease caught from a first-principles course. The two are complementary tools, not a hierarchy. Analogy gives you speed and the wisdom of crowds; first principles gives you originality and the ability to break out when the crowd is wrong. Neither dominates.
The best thinkers — engineers, investors, founders — reason by analogy by default and drop to first principles surgically, only where it pays. They’re not running raw derivations all day; that would be paralyzing. They copy proven answers cheaply and reserve the expensive tool for the few problems that reward it. Choosing which tool to use is itself the judgment call — and that judgment is the actual mastery.
Another pitfall: reinventing the wheel and analysis paralysis
There’s a failure mode at the bottom of the why-ladder: you keep asking “but why?” forever, re-deriving things humanity settled centuries ago, and never actually ship anything. This is analysis paralysis — drilling so deep into fundamentals that you never resurface to act.
If your “first-principles investigation” has you re-deriving thermodynamics to make a sandwich, you’ve lost the plot. First principles is a tool for building, not a license to never finish. At some point you stop digging, stand on the bedrock you found, and build. The goal was always a better answer — not an infinitely deep hole.
A practical stopping rule
Stop drilling “why” when you hit a truth you’d bet on, that experts also treat as settled, and that’s specific enough to build on. Going deeper than that is no longer thinking — it’s procrastinating with extra steps.
