Two people are stuck on the exact same problem. Same facts, same deadline, same coffee going cold beside them.
The first one asks: how is this normally done? What did the last team do? What does everyone in this industry do? Reasonable questions. They find the standard answer, ship it, and go home. This is reasoning by analogy — solving a new problem by matching it to old ones and copying what worked there.
The second one asks something stranger: what do we actually know is true here — really, for-certain true — and what must follow from that? They ignore the standard answer entirely and rebuild from the ground up. Most days this is slower and they land roughly where the first person did. But every so often, the rebuilt answer is one nobody else in the room could see. This is reasoning from first principles — and that occasional, others-can’t-find-it answer is the entire promise of this course.
What first-principles thinking is
Here’s the one-paragraph teaser (the full, careful definition gets its own lesson). First-principles thinking means boiling a problem down to the bedrock facts you’re genuinely sure are true, throwing out everything you merely assumed or inherited, and then building an answer back up from that bedrock — instead of copying whatever answer is lying around. The phrase is older than any startup founder who’s borrowed it: Aristotle called a first principle “the first basis from which a thing is known” — the irreducible starting point you can’t break down any further. That’s all a first principle is. The ground floor of what you know.

Before we explain anything — what do you think lets someone find a solution others miss?
Why copying usually works (and why that’s the trap)
Now, before this turns into a sermon against reasoning by analogy — copying the usual answer is good. Most of the time. It’s fast, it’s cheap, and it’s right often enough that defaulting to it isn’t lazy, it’s wise. You don’t re-derive the laws of cooking every time you make toast. You copy “toaster, two minutes,” because the standard answer is correct and re-thinking it would be a waste of a perfectly good morning.
The trap is that analogy works quietly and most of the time — so we reach for it even in the cases where it fails. And it fails in three situations: when the standard answer is flat-out wrong, when there is no standard answer (genuinely new problem), or when the answer is merely inherited — “we’ve always done it this way” — and nobody alive remembers why. First principles is the tool you pull out exactly then, and ideally only then. Knowing when not to bother is its own skill — we give it a whole lesson near the end.
The one-sentence version
First-principles thinking = reason up from what’s actually true, not from what’s usually done. If you remember nothing else from this course, remember that sentence — everything ahead is just learning to do it on purpose.

Then a Final Exam — graded, one question at a time, and one-way: once you answer, it locks. No back button, no retries. You’ll be ready for it.
A team needs to price a new product. Member A pulls up what three competitors charge and lands in the middle. Member B works out what the thing actually costs to make, what a customer would genuinely pay, and prices from there. Who is reasoning from first principles?
How to use this course
One rule, and it does most of the work: guess before you peek. When you hit an exercise, commit to an answer in your head before you reveal anything. The little jolt of being wrong is what makes the idea stick — a smooth, agreeable read-through teaches you almost nothing. The exercises aren’t a quiz on the lesson; they are the lesson. The prose is just there to set them up.
