Why you rate yourself as less biased than everyone else — the introspection illusion that powers it, why learning about biases can make it worse, and why 'feeling objective' is zero evidence of being objective.

You have spent a whole course learning to spot biases — confirmation bias bending your search, your reading, your memory; overconfidence inflating your certainty; the machinery of motivated reasoning humming away below awareness. So here is a fair question to open a debiasing course with: now that you know all the traps, how biased are you, compared to the average person? Hold that number in your head. Most people who have just studied biases answer “less than average — I know what to watch for now.” That answer is the subject of this lesson, and it is almost certainly wrong. The most reliable finding about biases is that we cannot see our own — and the more we learn about them, the more confidently we exempt ourselves.

The core finding: a bias about biases

Imagine handing everyone in a room a mirror and asking them to rate their own driving. The famous result — most people call themselves above-average drivers — is impossible on its face, because average is the middle. Now swap “driving” for “freedom from bias” and you have the bias blind spot: the tendency to see cognitive and motivational biases operating in other people far more readily than in yourself. It is, precisely, a bias about biases — a blind spot located exactly where a mirror should be.

The model was pinned down by the psychologist Emily Pronin and colleagues in 2002. The experiment is beautifully simple. You give people a crisp description of a well-known bias — say, the tendency to take more credit for group successes than failures, or to judge a study as sound when it agrees with you — and then ask two questions: “How much does this bias affect the average American?” and “How much does it affect you?” Across bias after bias, the answers came back lopsided in the same direction: people rated themselves as less susceptible than the average person. Not a little less, on average — reliably less, on almost every bias, for almost everyone.

Worked example. Suppose the described bias is the self-serving attribution tendency: taking personal credit for wins and blaming circumstances for losses. Ask a hundred office workers to rate how much it grips “the average colleague” and they’ll rate it high — oh, everyone does that. Ask them to rate how much it grips them and the number drops — well, I try to be fair about credit. Average the two columns and you get a room where nearly everyone is, by their own report, fairer-than-average about credit. Somebody’s arithmetic is wrong, and it isn’t the researcher’s. The gap between the two columns is the blind spot, measured in points.

Here is the detail that makes it genuinely unnerving. Pronin’s team tried to talk people out of it. They explained the bias blind spot itself — told participants, in plain language, that people tend to think they’re less biased than others, and that this very tendency is a bias. Then they asked again. People largely nodded along… and still rated themselves as less biased than average. Being informed of the trap did not spring it. The blind spot survived direct sunlight.

The impossible room

If almost everyone in a room sincerely rates themselves as less biased than the room’s average, at least half of them are wrong by simple arithmetic — and none of them feels like the wrong half. That feeling of being the fair exception is not evidence of being the fair exception. It is the single most common symptom of the disease.

When this bites

This bites hardest in exactly the rooms that most need clear sight: hiring panels each sure their own judgment is the objective one, juries, peer reviewers, doctors weighing a second opinion, and — the reason you’re here — learners who just finished a biases course. Any setting where the correction for bias depends on people volunteering “I might be the biased one” is a setting where the blind spot quietly disables the correction, because the one person who never gets nominated as possibly-biased is oneself.

The introspection illusion that powers it

Why does the mirror come back blank? Because of a lopsided way we gather evidence about minds — the introspection illusion. When we judge other people’s biases, we only have their behavior to go on: what they did, what they chose, how it turned out. When we judge our own biases, we have something others can’t see — a direct feed of our introspection: our thoughts, our felt intentions, our sense of having weighed things fairly. And here is the trap: biases operate below awareness, so when you look inward for one, you find nothing. No little voice announces “I am now discounting this because it threatens my ego.” The bias does its work and leaves no fingerprint in consciousness. So you look inward, find a clean, sincere, well-meaning deliberation, and conclude: no bias here.

The asymmetry is the whole engine. You judge him by the outside — his self-serving choice looks self-serving. You judge yourself by the inside — and your motives feel pure, because feelings of purity are exactly what an unconscious bias leaves untouched. Same behavior, two verdicts, because the evidence sets are different: their conduct versus your intentions.

Worked example. Two colleagues both got passed over for the same promotion that went to a third person, Rina. Ask each about the other’s reaction: “He’s bitter — he’s just telling himself Rina got it by politics because he can’t accept she was better.” Ask them about their own reaction and you get: “I’m not bitter, I’ve thought about this calmly, and objectively Rina really did get it through politics.” Each reads the other’s grievance as motivated (behavior: sour grapes) and reads their own as clear-eyed (introspection: feels calm and fair). Both can’t be the objective one. The tell is that each cited inner experience — “I’ve thought about it calmly” — as if a feeling of calm were proof of accuracy. It isn’t. The bias never disturbs the feeling of calm; that’s what makes it a bias.

Why learning about biases can make it worse

You would expect a biases course to shrink the blind spot. Sometimes it does the opposite, and this is the twist that gives the whole debiasing course its reason to exist. Call it the “I’m-not-biased” bias: the better you can name biases, the more raw material you have to build the flattering conclusion “I know the traps, therefore I avoid them.” Knowledge becomes ammunition for the exemption. You can now spot the sunk-cost fallacy in your brother-in-law with surgical precision — and that very fluency makes it feel obvious that you, the one who can spot it, must be above it.

This runs on a deeper habit called naive realism: the unshakeable sense that I see reality as it plainly is. From inside naive realism, your own views don’t feel like views at all — they feel like a direct readout of the facts. So when someone disagrees, only a few explanations survive: they haven’t seen the facts yet (ignorant), they’re not thinking straight (stupid), or their judgment is warped by self-interest (biased). What never makes the list is the possibility that you’re the biased one, because from the inside your position doesn’t feel like a position — it feels like the truth. Learning a vocabulary of biases hands naive realism a sharper tool: now the disagreers aren’t just wrong, they’re demonstrably falling for confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, the availability heuristic — all the ones you, of course, have transcended.

The knowledge trap, stated plainly

Knowing about biases does two things at once. It gives you real tools to catch them — in other people, easily. And it gives your ego a more sophisticated argument for its own innocence — in yourself. The second effect can outrun the first. Studying this material without turning it hard on yourself doesn’t make you less biased; it makes you a better prosecutor of everyone else.

Asymmetric insight: knowing them better than they know us

The blind spot has a social twin worth naming, because it shapes real conflicts. Pronin also documented the illusion of asymmetric insight: people believe they know others better than those others know themselves, while believing that others know them less well than they know themselves. In plain terms — I can see through you; you can’t see through me. Stacked on top of the bias blind spot, it produces a tidy, self-serving asymmetry: I understand your biases better than you do, and you understand mine worse than I do. You become, in your own eyes, transparent to yourself and opaque to others, while everyone else is legible to you and mysteriously blind to themselves.

There’s a cynical edge here too. Because you judge others by behavior and yourself by intention, you tend to assume their stated reasons are cover stories for the real (biased, self-interested) motives you can see — while trusting that your own stated reasons are the genuine article. This is why negotiations, family feuds, and comment sections all sound the same: two parties each convinced they alone see the situation straight and the other is captured by bias.

Worked example. Two negotiators leave the table each having concluded the same thing about the other: “They were completely unreasonable — obviously anchored to their opening number, obviously letting ego drive them.” Each read the other’s rigidity as bias (behavior seen from outside) and their own rigidity as principle (intention felt from inside). Neither entertained that they were the anchored one, because their own anchoring didn’t feel like anchoring — it felt like holding a fair line. The illusion of asymmetric insight seals it: each is sure they’ve correctly diagnosed the other’s psychology while the other has missed theirs entirely.

The blind spot weaponised: “you’re just biased, I’m objective”

Every model has a failure mode, and this one’s is especially ugly because it disguises itself as reasoning. Once you can name biases, “you’re just biased” becomes a tempting argument-ender — a way to dismiss any inconvenient view without engaging it, by diagnosing the other person instead of their claim. It feels like intellectual high ground. It is usually the blind spot driving. Notice the structure: the accusation explains away their position as a psychological symptom while quietly exempting yours from the same treatment. If bias is real and universal — which is the entire premise of this course — then it is at least as likely to be shaping the accuser as the accused.

The load-bearing correction is a single sentence, and it’s the thesis of this whole course: feeling objective is not evidence of being objective. The feeling of clear sight is manufactured by the same unconscious machinery that produces the bias — it is a symptom, not a measurement. Which is exactly why the escape can’t come from introspecting harder. You cannot look inward to check for a thing that is invisible to looking inward; a blank mirror looks the same whether or not the flaw is there.

Warning:

The un-winnable move

“I’m not biased, you are” is unfalsifiable from the inside — it will feel true to whoever says it, biased or not, because the feeling of objectivity is standard equipment on every mind. So the feeling settles nothing. The moment your defense against bias consists of being confident you don’t have it, the defense has already failed.

Here’s the hopeful part, and the reason the next lessons exist. If the blind spot is powered by trusting your introspection, then the escape is to stop relying on introspection and lean on tools that work from the outside — the same vantage point from which you already see everyone else’s biases clearly. That means: checking your predictions against recorded outcomes instead of your memory of them; using structured criteria and checklists so a decision can’t be quietly re-scored in your favor; taking the outside view (what usually happens in cases like this?) instead of your inside story; inviting a genuine devil’s advocate and actually counting the hits against you; and asking not “do I feel fair?” but “what would I predict if I were wrong, and did that happen?” None of these require you to catch a bias in the act — which is good, because you can’t. They route around the blank mirror. Lessons 3 and 4 build these tools in detail; this lesson’s only job was to convince you that you, specifically, need them.
