In the last lesson you watched a switch flip and a rival back off. Satisfying — but magic until you can explain exactly why it works. This lesson is the machinery. By the end you’ll be able to say, precisely, why a rational opponent is more afraid of you when you have fewer choices, and you’ll have a repeatable method for spotting these situations in the wild.
The engine has a name: backward induction. When one player moves and then another responds, a smart player doesn’t reason forwards (“here’s what I’d like to happen”). They reason backwards: “If I make this move, what will they do in response? And knowing that, what should I do now?” You look ahead to the end of the game and reason back to the start. It’s the single most important habit in sequential strategy, and commitment is what happens when you use it against yourself — on purpose.
The game, one move at a time
Here’s our situation again, laid out as a sequence. There are two players and two decision points:
- First, the Rival chooses: Challenge you, or Stay away.
- Then, if challenged, You choose: Fight (a bruising war that’s costly for both) or Yield (fold, accommodate, cut your losses).
And here are the payoffs that make it interesting (higher is better for that player):

Read the story in those numbers. You do best when the rival never shows up (10) — you keep the whole prize. If they challenge and you fight, it’s a disaster for both of you (you 2, them 1) — war is expensive. If they challenge and you yield, you’ve lost ground but avoided the costly fight (you 5), while they’ve grabbed a nice chunk of your prize (7).
Now let’s reason backwards, the way the rival does.
Step 1 — What will you do if challenged? (Reason about the last move first.) Look only at the second decision point, where you’ve already been challenged. Your two options are Fight (payoff 2) or Yield (payoff 5). Five beats two. So a rational you, once challenged, will yield — a costly fight leaves you worse off than folding. Your fists are up, but everyone can do the arithmetic: you’d rather not swing.
Step 2 — So what will the rival do? (Reason back to the first move.) The rival looks ahead to Step 1 and sees it clearly: “If I challenge, they’ll yield, and I’ll get 7. If I stay away, I get 4.” Seven beats four. So the rival challenges — confident you’ll fold. The game lands on (challenge, yield): you get 5, they get 7. You’ve been pushed around, and it was perfectly rational for them to push, because your own best response gave them the green light.
That’s the ugly resting point when you keep all your options. Your freedom to yield is precisely what the rival exploits. They’re not gambling — they’ve read your incentives and know you’ll fold. Now watch what one act of self-sabotage does.
Burning the option
Suppose that before the game starts, you do something drastic and public: you destroy your own ability to yield. You sign a contract that fines you a fortune if you back down. You stake your public reputation on fighting. You hand the decision to a lieutenant under strict orders to fight no matter what. However you do it, the Yield branch is now gone — if challenged, you will fight, whether you like it or not.
Run backward induction again on this new game:
Redo Step 1 — What will you do if challenged now? You have only one option left: Fight (payoff 2). The comfortable Yield-for-5 is gone — you burned it. So if challenged, the game reaches the fight outcome: you 2, rival 1.
Redo Step 2 — So what does the rival do now? The rival looks ahead again: “If I challenge, they can only fight, and I get 1. If I stay away, I get 4.” Now four beats one. So the rival stays away — challenging has become a losing move. The game lands on stay away: you get 10, they get 4.
The whole paradox in two numbers
By keeping your options open, you land on 5. By destroying an option — the very thing that looks like self-harm — you land on 10. And notice the beautiful part: at the final outcome, you never fight. The threat of fighting was enough. A weapon that works is a weapon you never have to fire.
Your payoff doubled because you made yourself less free. That’s not a trick of these particular numbers — it’s the deep structure. When your soft option (yield) is what tempts the rival to attack, removing it removes the temptation. You didn’t change your strength, your resources, or your luck. You changed what the rival could predict about you, and that was enough to move the equilibrium.

What your commitment did
Exposed. With your retreat intact, a costly fight is worse for you than folding, so the rival correctly predicts you will yield — and challenges. You keep the option to yield, and that soft option is exactly what invites the challenge. Burn your retreat and see what happens.
Three discoveries are hiding in those sliders. Go find each one:
- When commitment is genius. At the default settings (your fight payoff below your yield payoff, the rival’s fight payoff below their stay-away), burning your retreat converts a challenge into a stay-away and your payoff leaps. This is the sweet spot: you’d otherwise be tempted to fold, and the fight genuinely hurts the rival.
- When commitment is pointless. Drag your fight payoff above 5 (above your yield payoff). Now fighting is already your best response — you’d fight even with the yield option available — so your threat is credible without committing. The rival stays away either way. Tying your hands adds nothing; you never needed to.
- When commitment is a trap. Put your fight payoff back low, then drag the rival’s fight payoff above 4 (above their stay-away option). Now the fight doesn’t hurt them enough to deter — they challenge even when you’re committed. Uncommitted, you could have yielded and salvaged 5; committed, you’re locked into a fight for a miserable 2. You’ve handcuffed yourself to a disaster.
That third case is the one to remember, and we’ll return to it at the end of the course. A commitment is only as good as the threat behind it, and a threat only deters if carrying it out genuinely hurts the other side. Burning a bridge when the enemy can’t be stopped anyway doesn’t scare them — it just guarantees you can’t escape.

The subtle engine: it’s about their beliefs, not your strength
Step back and notice what actually moved. You didn’t get stronger. Your fight payoff was 2 before and 2 after. Your resources, your army, your bank balance — unchanged. The only thing that changed was that the rival could no longer count on you folding. Commitment operates entirely through the other side’s expectations. It’s a psychological weapon aimed at a rational mind: you rearrange your own incentives so that the other player, reasoning correctly about you, reaches a conclusion that’s good for you.
This is why a commitment must be visible and believed to work at all. Cortés burning his ships in secret would have deterred no one — the whole point was that everyone saw the smoke. A binding contract locked in a drawer that the rival never learns about changes nothing. The commitment has to reach into the rival’s head and change what they predict.
