Imagine two minds approaching the same question — does this medicine work? The first is a scientist: it lists what it believes, then deliberately goes hunting for the result that would prove the belief false, because that’s the only test worth running. The second is a defense attorney: it has already decided the verdict and now combs the world for anything that supports the case, while quietly filing away whatever doesn’t. Here’s the uncomfortable news this course is built around: left to its own devices, your mind is almost always the second one. It is a brilliant, tireless lawyer for whatever you already believe — and it never tells you it’s doing it.
That habit has a name: confirmation bias — the tendency to seek out, favor, and remember information that confirms your existing beliefs, and to ignore, discount, or forget information that contradicts them. It is probably the single most documented bias in all of psychology, and the most consequential, because it quietly corrupts every other kind of thinking. You can know statistics cold and still only run the analyses that flatter your hunch. You can be scrupulously honest and still never notice the evidence you didn’t look for. The bias doesn’t make you dumb or dishonest. It makes you a one-sided researcher who feels like a fair one.

The mind defends its beliefs like a lawyer, not a scientist: it looks for what confirms and overlooks what refutes — so the test that matters is the one you’d rather not run. If you remember nothing else, the question “What would prove me wrong, and have I actually looked for it?” will do more work than any amount of raw intelligence.
The trap is that confirmation feels like evidence. Every fact that fits your view lands with a little click of see, I was right — and a hundred of those clicks feels like proof. But a belief that only ever collects supporting facts has been tested by exactly none of them. A theory you can’t imagine being wrong isn’t strong; it’s unfalsifiable, which is a different and much worse thing. The skill this course builds is learning to feel suspicious of that comfortable click, and to go looking, on purpose, for the fact that would wipe the smile off your face.

Why a smarter mind can fall harder
The most counter-intuitive fact about confirmation bias is that intelligence is not a defense — and can be a liability. We’d love to believe that smart, well-informed people are inoculated. The opposite tends to hold. A sharper mind is a better lawyer: give it a conclusion it wants and it will generate more sophisticated arguments for that conclusion, find subtler flaws in the opposing evidence, and construct a more airtight rationalization — all while feeling like rigorous analysis. Researchers have a name for this: motivated reasoning, the use of our reasoning power not to find the truth but to defend a preferred answer. The clever person doesn’t escape the bias. They build it a cathedral.
This is also why confirmation bias connects to the model just before it on this path, incentives. There you saw that a reward can quietly bend what a person sincerely believes — incentive-caused bias. Confirmation bias is the cognitive engine underneath that: the mind’s standing tendency to gather and weigh evidence in favor of the conclusion it’s already leaning toward, whether the lean came from a paycheck, a prior commitment, an identity, or just the belief you happened to form first. Incentives supply the motive; confirmation bias supplies the method.

How to use this course
